Does anyone here know anything about the 1967 Toyota 2000 GT that Make Up Co produced many years ago?

About seven or eight years ago, Kane & Co had one that I tried to purchase, but partway through arranging the deal, they ceased all communication (and I've never heard from them again). However, while I can no longer recall what the price was, it must have been reasonable, or I would never have attempted to buy it in the first place. But, one has just surfaced right now in Japan - and the asking price is 150,000 Yen! (US$1880) While it is a superb model, it is still only a curbside. I am guessing that part of the reasoning behind high price is its rarity (this is only the second one I have ever seen), but was there anything else special about the model?

A few years ago, they also produced a series of 2000 GT Roadsters, in conjunction with LookSmart Japan, but those were within their normal reasonable price range (I did buy one of those!).

This is not important and I am not considering trying to buy the Y150,000 one in Japan, it is just that the massive price made me curious as to what might be so special about it... if anything at all.

Good luck finding such a kit, X.Man!

Out of interest, I'd be interested to learn the market value of this/my kit. The market, of course, is finite and rather specialist but, despite this, I suspect (current) demand certainly exceeds supply!

I'd also be delighted to learn more regarding the factory-built variants...

Thank you so much for that! Actually a most useful bit of information.
That "MF-10" designation is also on the boxes of the built models.

Of course, now I am going to have to try and track down a kit for myself...

Hello X - Man

Please accept my sincere apologies for late response.

Yes, it is a genuine 'Make Up' kit, albeit under their 'GP Factory' branding (I believe they also marketed thenselves under the 'Superior Models' brand name). I purchased this 'virgin' NOS/MIB kit from the first owner who purchased the kit directly from Uemoto-San when visiting a Model Exhibition in the UK "in the 1990s".

The kit, as purchased from Uemoto-San, was deemed "very expensive" (even by the standards of a contemporary Le Phoenix / AMR kit purchaser) and neither the original kit owner or myself have ever seen a similar kit for sale since original purchase direct from the manufacturer.

The - sturdy - box containing the kit denotes the model designation "MF-10 2000GT 001'

Sincerely,

Nicholas

Would love to learn more about your kit, Nicholas. Is it actually a Make Up kit?

To the best of my knowledge, the original 2000GT coupé version by Make Up (i.e., JS07A [white], JSO7B [silver], JS07C [red]), might have been white metal - however, the later LookSmart Japan roadsters were definitely resin. I am unaware of any of these ever being available in kit form.

I bought this white metal kit (not built model), in perfect NOS condition, about two months ago! I felt compelled to buy it a) because of the subject matter, b) because instinct told me the kit is super-rare (I've never seen another) c) because any Japanese white metal kit is rare and d, finally) because I have close, family, connections with Japan.

Presumably, this kit remains valuable? I would be intrigued to learn more. Happy to share the story behind the acquisition of my kit if anyone might be interested?

I would love to see that one in person!

As a general rule, Japanese cars are not really my thing - but the Toyota 2000 GT has fascinated me since childhood. Right now I have my eye on an HPI Racing 2000 GT in a very dark red. I would rather have a Make up one, but the HPI is a fraction of the price and almost as good...

Interesting to hear there was a silver one. I have only ever seen white.

Their roadsters came in four colours;
LSJ006A Pegasus white (James Bond, "You Only Live Twice")
LSJ006B pearl white
LSJ006C silver
LSJ006D red

A shop near my parents home had the silver version for sale years ago. It has been sold for Euro 150! Original Price was Euro 300.

Thanks! :)
So did you find a model like this one?
Make Up made only this colour?
150,000 is a very important price for a curbside model!

Hello, a friend of mine has the roadster one, a really nice model.
Have you some pics of the coupé?
