I recently acquired a 1/43 Chaparral 2H made by Ian Pickering of England back in 1970. It is my understanding that Ian was an accomplished pattern maker and did work for Midlantic and Marsh. The Chaparral looks like a one off hand made model as everything on it appears lettered by hand.
Anybody?

I wish I knew how you got the pictures to show like that. Thanks for re-formating. I saw the model on eBay and missed the end of the auction. I was finally able to find the new owner in Texas and subsequently found out that he was a huge slot car fan. I had to part with some of my vintage slot cars to get this little gem.

It is a pretty amazing old piece. Sadly, I think it is all to easy to dismiss the early work of people like Ian Pickering or John Day, in this age of computerised accuracy and forget that those guys started our hobby - by hand alone!

It's the first time that I hear this name althow I am a huge fan of the pioneers.

Mr. Pickering is one of the most famous and beloved pattern makers that there is for the last three decades and more. He made models in the early days from scratch handcarving wood bodies and using bits of metal and other things like that. You have a precious jewel that respresents the early work of the famous British pattern maker for many companies including Marsh,Brooklin,MiniMarque,Midlantic.I have only heard of one other collector who bought one similar to yours which he made in 1968 from a seller on ebay. He did not know what he had. It was a thrilling surprise. Way to go. You scored!! I am a HUGE fan of the Man's work. I love the old handmade patterns over the modern computer made affairs. So happy to hear of another on this forum who appreciates it too. So cool. |
