Started this build in 11/09 and posted the progress on the old board. I have all the pics so far here:

http://s185.photobucket.com/albums/x37/914joe/basic%20550/

Have'nt had much time to build the last few weeks. The motor I was using for this is hard to come by and instead of using my last 1 I decided to make some copies. Made some alterations to the block and cooling fan then prepped those parts for molding. My mold making experience is limited and did have problems evacuating air bubbles but after a few pours I ended up with some workable parts.

In the top left of this pic are the Bosica parts I started with, bottom left are my cast parts, bottom right are those cast parts reworked and top right is the Basic43 motor that is junk.

Made a tonneau and started painting some parts

I hate paint!!! It was hard to get the clearances for the motor to fit under the lid during mockup and needed to do some work on the clamshell for things to fit. The paint on the bottom also thru off my tolerances on the fit of the rear lid and some more work was required.

Joe's 356 Split-Window Cab sold immediately after I listed it so I have moved the 12 photos I took to the Gallery. Joe's magnificent work now shows up in the first two thumbnails. Enjoy!

I like the clean little Porches. Joe you did a super job! Wondering what to do next? You said you like to make an Italian Harley from before.

That's the one Joe. I had forgotten about the steering. Here are two pics. I will take a full set of 12 today showing the engine and front boot. Such an amazing work of art, I want it badly, must be strong. :-)

Thanks Mike!!! That black car is one of my favorites... That model has working steering. It is modeled after a 50/51 split window cab. I've tried to make another one of those and ruined a few Bosica bodies trying... I'll try again.

Here's my pics of that car:

Nope, that wasn't right, just researched the 356 America Roadster. This is more like a 356 cabriolet, very early. I will send pics to you Joe.

What a masterpiece! Well done Joe. Shin who? :-)

BTW, I have one of your gems in front of me right now and will take photos today. Remember the black 356 America? I think that is what it is called, split windshield, burgundy interior, white walls, I wish I could keep it myself. This one will be fun to photograph. Do you still have a link to your WIP on this one? Mike

Done!!! All the hinges were tricky for different reasons and I'm glad everything fit. Now I have nothing on the bench and don't know what to do with myself... I even cleaned the garage.

Thanks for watching and for all the kind words!!!

Fantastic.
Thanks for the photos

Been finalizing fit and prepping parts for paint. I did'nt have any seats that were accecptable so I reshaped a Speedster seat. Made a mold and poured a set. I also needed the correct seatbelt hardware. I have some fancy photoetch in my parts box but none that matched the vintage belts. Made these from some copper wire and some brass flecks.

All the wheel studs have detail turned to simulate studs. Hard to see but noticed at different angles.

Very impressive work Joe! That fuel cell is fantastic. Love the straps, the best I have ever seen. I love the paint scheme too. Can't wait to see the final result.

Looking great Joe!

Finally found time to pick up where I left off on this. Body parts are painted, taped and painted the scallops on the rear. This was a pain sanding all these parts between paint coats.

Still had some parts to make for the front trunk. Gas tank is formed from Karmann badges from one of old junked 914's. I turned aluminum in my drill to make the filler cap and brake fluid reservoirs, shaped a battery box and made battery & tank straps from brass sheet.

I also made the fuel pumps.

Looking terrific Joe!

Added fan belt, plug & starter wires, trailing arms, driveshafts, brake lines & hyd clutch line. I needed to get these parts together first to check the fit of the rear lid befor painting. Happy with the results so far and now need to paint the body.
