Hi, I apologize mods if this is the wrong section. I've looked at building 1/43 or 1/18 scale models for a while but basically haven't made the jump. Some of the builds on here are simply amazing to see and above all would be rewarding work. Have seen a few kits on the bay but would I be better off buying a quality kit bbr/mr or something mediocre tron/bang/hw? It seems lots of kits are up there in $, don't want to get off to a bad start so to speak :)

Received those model kits today Jonathan.. Thankyou sooo much!
Now I just need to hunt for all the gear required to build.
Might take a trip to Hobbyco this weekend, doesn't look like great weather for mowing anyways :)

Simple tools like tweezers can be bought at your local pharmacist. I actually use my Victorinox pocket knife a lot, it has small useable tweezers, a sharp knife, proper size scissors and a good file.
It's the materials used that are harder to get hold of, like proper adhadhesives and paints. If nothing is near, internet is your best friend! I believe cyanoacrylate and clear!! 2-component glues are pretty much essentials. I have just started trying putty, standard Revell tube, seems to work fine but mind you, I have no experience on that matter! |

There is a very interesting book for the novice modeler
edited by John Simons (Yes ! the Marsh Model boss).
It's called "The world of 43rd" ,and to me personally, it has helped me a lot in my early modeler days.
I think it's still for sale on the site of Marsh Models ...
As for the purchase of materials , there are hundreds of websites.
Sites like "Hobby Link Japan" or "Four Small Wheels"
they have everything , and are very friendly and efficient.

Yes Dave, I did have a look at that. How is that build going?
Have a couple of questions: where is the best place to buy tools? Tweezers/Pliers/files etc grit paper. Ebay has plenty of options obviously, should I buy quality?
Also ..what are the recommended glues/putty to use?

Hi Brett,
I myself started building my first 1/43 model lat year, actually my first kit in over 10 years I guess. I bought a pre-painted BBR kit. This gives you a nice way to try your hand at this scale. The paint finish on it seems perfect to me. I posted it on this forum, about a 575 Superamerica. Should add some updates to it, but it gives an idea. I was surprised how small parts really are!!

I wouldn't worry about the mods, Brett - there are only two of us; Mike McCormick ("Ferrarinut"), and myself. Mike is an absolutely top-shelf bloke, you won't have any worries there. It's no problem whatsoever for me to move a topic if it needs it.
As for your question, I'll drop you an email with a proposal that might be of interest to you.
