I was very curious about the new 250SWB california by BBR.
The MR/Looksmart isn't my favourite modell, because the windscreen-pillars are to big.

Ive seen the new BBR version, and its a bit disapointing
Windscreen and overall appearence is really nice, but the nose is to flat! The same goes for the 250GT cabriolet.

I can't understand why this can happen, Its pretty obvious it isn't right, and it can easily be corrected in the prototype stage of development.

The AMR's are still the best!

Hans, as for the new looksmart range, i am not to happy with their wheels. I am not sure of what the history is behind them? Are they related to MR Collection? I know they re-made the 1961 Ferrari 410 SA metallic red (looks like a 250 California) and i am not sure if they are related to MR Collection in any way but i have never liked the newer wheels of MR collection or Looksmart, on their newer model range (after MR and BBR split partnership)...
I absolutely love my California from MR Collection (with BBR wheels).. The newer BBR models are nice but i agree with you to some degree that they could have put more effort into making it more accurate. The same goes for a few other recent models they have released.. I won't ever exchange my 250 because i love it and it is one of the first models i ever bought. It may not be 100% accurate but you also have to consider, this model (MR)is like 8-10 years old now?

Looksmart is a part of MR.MR's older models are "recycled"by producing them in China.As far as I can see there is little to no difference between the models made by MR years ago,and the new Chinese Looksmart production,except the price.
Collectors of the original MR models are not happy with this situation as it could reduce the value of the original models.On the other hand,collectors that missed out on the originals are happy as they can have the same models they missed.

Some of my Looksmart 250SWB's.I purchased,I think all the variations,colors,open,hardtop,covered,and uncovered headlights,street and competition...etc.There are a number I haven't photographed yet.I also have an AMR 250 SWB,and LWB,which are my favorite models of this car.There are very few wire wheels supplied with any makers factory built models that I am happy with.I am not happy with the tires on the looksmart models,they look like SUV tires.:-O








































Sorry for the quality of the photos,I have yet to get another camera better suited for this purpose.

No matter how much CAD was involved in the production process to bring perfection, the best 250 SWB California in 1/43rd is still the AMR Ref. 462 from the early eighties. If it is properly built, it is an absolute masterpiece regarding shape and character.

If you look at this photo of a 250 Spyder,(I believe a LWB), you can see the windshield pillar is not as large as made on the Looksmart/MR.I think that if they had added a scribed line to look like the separation of the door glass channel and the windshield pillar,it would have looked better.I was thinking of adding a line with a drafting pen,or scribing a channel with a knife to see if it helps the effect.

Although I think the AMR version is still the best, the shape of the MR/Looksmart is better than the BBR, adding a line on the windscreenpillars would improve it..

Last year I bought several older built AMR kits, to restore, you can't beat their quality! I recently acquired a 250GT cabriolet from Fred, and its a gorgious modell!

I also prefer the AMR over other models of the car.

A few years ago,when I was buying up some poorly made,or damaged AMR models,people asked why.I told them that when new kits get scarce,or impossible to get,and then only at silly prices,a stripped,poorly built model is almost the same as a kit.As long as the parts are there,it can be rebuilt to perfection.

This is where a metal kit has an advantage over a resin kit,you can drop it in a jar of paint thinner,(or brake fluid,or lacquer thinner,paint remover etc...),leave it for awhile,and strip off everything without harming the parts.Clear parts are the only parts that you might have to be careful with,remove first,or remake......

Original decals are another story!

Better this than no AMR at all ;-).

Couldn't agree more!!

When I het the chance, I allways buy older neglected or poor built AMR's. If its complete and the clearparts are good, its allways worth a rebuilt!

I had an AMR restored by Monza Models a couple of months ago. Easily best 30 euro´s I have ever spend.

One thing I noticed, on the new BBR 250 SWB california's is that the rear tail lights have no amber turn signals in them. If you look at the MR models, you can see the tail light with the amber turn signal directly above it. The BBR version looks like just a tail light with no "amber" colored turn signals... Maybe it's just the lighting of the models i've seen?
I'm not crazy about the fog lights either. They appear to be pointing in a downward direction instead of facing straight forward.. I will stick with my MR California... Until i find a AMR ;-)

Regarding the 250 Cabriolet by BBR, is the color right or is it the lighting again? The model looks purple in color but the 1:1 looks dark blue. I am sure BBR get the correct color codes before spraying these models, right?

Hi everybody!
With great interest I've read comments about 250 California from different manufacturers. Now I've got an offer of two old LWB Californias from Ilario - the prototype 0769GT and series car. As I never seen them, please, tell what do you think regarding their quality. Any opinions are welcome. Thank you in advise.

Seems to me that the color on the RGM miniature is right!

Even if i respect Mike and Rainer for what they do, i must say that the color is totally wrong.
They claimed that the car is from the 2007 Concorso D'Eleganza Villa D'Este 2007. I was there, shot the Calif, and no, the real one is closer than tdf blue.
