I remember visiting Europe during high-school spring break trips. One special place was Switzerland and visiting a small model shop called Model-Auto.
It was a dinky little shop tucked almost under the street. If you weren't interested in cars, you would've walked right past it.
Anyway, I went in and this was when I was around 18-19 years old and my jaws dropped. The store was small, but packed from floor to ceiling with models of various sizes. This was the first time I knew of BBR and their Koenig-Specials models.
Now, for my question. I remembered purchasing a white Ford Escort Cosworth and a set of what looked like after market wheels with photo-etched parts. These were gorgeous detailed BBS wheels sold as upgrades to your 1/43 scale cars.
Now, this was back in early 90's.
Does anybody know what wheel sets I'm talking about and where on Earth can I find them?
I just came across a gun-metal gray version of the same Ford Escort Cosworth I purchased back then on ebay. It's brand new from MiniChamps and I'd love to find the same set of wheels.
The wheels really made the Ford Escort Cosworth look superb as the stockers were kind of dull five-spokes.
The aftermarkets were made by some unknown company, looked like machined aluminum rims with seperate photo-etched meshed spokes. You would glue the photo-etched spokes onto the rims, and with the provided axles, bolt these to your cars chassis.

There are several outfits who produce 'aftermarket' wheels:
Sprint43 has by far the largest range.
Also, Scala43 produce them separately, as well as Tameo, Tron, Racing43 and Renaissance. I might have missed some there, too.

| Thanks, I'll have a look at those companies. It's fun to customize a model with aftermarket wheels and make it look better than stock. |

Awesome! Will have to explore their web site further but look's a lot closer to what I'm looking for. Certainly those wheels will work.
Do they accept PayPal as a form of payment? How do I order from them? They don't look like they have too much English. |

I am pretty sure you will find their English sufficiently adequate, although I cannot recall if they accept PayPal or not (I think they do).

When I click on the given link, I see some great wheels, but not much English. The English needed is for shopping around. I don't see any signs that they take PayPal. :(
So, not sure how to order from theme. Would have to be direct payment with CC. |

Fair enough.
In that case, try Grand Prix Models in England (click on their "Advanced Search" in the top right-hand corner, then select 'wheels' as the product type and 'Sprint 43' as the manufacturer).

Hi there. It was such a long time ago I can't remember who made them or what the actual name was. All I know, was the rim looked like machined aluminum, and the spokes were photo-etched that you had to glue onto the rim. Like a two-piece wheel. It was a classic 80's BBS style wheel and they suited this model quite nicely.

I also can't recall if the kit came with axles or not as I think I probably used the models stock axles for proper fit.
Wish I had more information for you, but gees, that was like 15-18 years ago?
I think the wheels were available in both silver and gold finishes. |
