Dear all
I am looking for information on this strange AMR GTO I bought some time ago. I think this is an Ref. 400 body. It seems to being somehow plated, not painted. And it looks a bit like matt finished bronze. It consists of all the whitemetal parts (incl. interiour, steering-wheel)and also the wheels are plated.
What is this? An AMR special version or something from Dannhausen (like the stanum linea cars)? Something done by someone privately?
Any help is much appreciated, I have no clue but am very curious. Thank you for reading, hope someone might be able to help. Kind regards Wolfgang

Wolfgang, I saw it passing by on ebay, great buy!
I think its a brass/bronze master that was assembled. These were the models the molds were made from.
Never seen one before

I think that it is a Stannum Linea. Two years ago, I bought on eBay a TdF # 153 GTO D. Piper, painted and complete. As my intention was to restore it completely,my surprise was to find a bronze car(?). The appearance was similar to that shown in the picture but when I started to filing it, appeared in a corner the white metal. I've consulted the seller, and he said that it was an Stannum Linea AMR , which he had painted. Of course, I not decorate it, and I don't put glasses or headlights. I sent it to polish and shine to a jeweler. Today, he glows like gold !!.

I didn't know the stanum linea models were gold-colored. Thought they were silver
I know the masters were made in bronze or brass, so I figured this could be a master..
Thanks for the input Juan
its a nice piece!

Dear all Yes I bought this hoping it might be a brass / bronze master. But I still guess it is a somehow plated whitemetal kit. I´d assume it has to be more heavy to be brass. Still have to weigh it. Didn´t want to scratch the surface to see what is beneath.
I also know stanum linea as silver. Basically polished white metal. As seen in the link by 126ck (thanks).
Jerry, it is interresting you also got a bronze-colour plated model. So this is a hint for some kind of series. Not a one-off by an individual. And your experience would fit to my belive it is plated whitemetal. Would you mind and post a picture of your model? Or send one privat?
Thanks all for your kind help, I keep searching for the truth and background on this model. Any help appreciated.
Kind regards Wolfgang

Hi Wolfgang, I received an email from Jann in Germany about this model. See his comments below. He shared some photos so I might upload those as well but looks like your model is a painted white metal version. Mike
Hello Mike, GCS68 has send some photos of a AMR GTO. It is a series "Nostalgia one" model. I have found one of these models too. The first time I hoped to have a brass master. But in the meantime I think it is just a surfaced / coated white metal model.
The weight of the bare Stanum linea and the coated model is nearly exactly the same (164 gr and 166 gr). So I think no solid brass master. But maybe Wolfgang can check the weight of his models to know if it is brass or not.
At Danhausen they made some experiments I think. Beside the bare Stanum linea models there are a few coated brass models (like these two here shown) and some chromed or nickel plated models produced. The nickel plated models were even presented on the standard AMR acrylic base with numbered plate and original AMR box. In my opinion some nice AMR memorabilia but unfortunatelly for me too nothing of worth..... sorry.
Best regards, Jann

Sorry about the poor quality of the photo.:-))) I also bought it a German ebay seller For me it is very valuable, because it is extremely rare and is part of the history of AMR GTO 62.

I am surprised to see that both are different versions! If it was factory made, would Mike Graig know more about it?
Is there nothing on the inside of the body, some kind of inscription or extra signing on the chassis-plate?

I was delighted to receive a very nice email from Antony Ruf this morning. Antony was following this thread and offered to share some insight. I am sure all will enjoy! Mike
Hi Mike, happy new year to you and to your forum members!
I saw the bronze plated GTO thread in your forum. I thought I may be of some help with sharing what I know :
Bronze plated models are a little part of the AMR/X history. The thing is the company making the foundry had a plating facility. It was used by AMR/X for chrome plating wheels, bumpers, and so on. As far as the archives available are talking, the factory built (1) bronze plated models are : 2 Porsche 356 C coupé in 1981 2 Porsche Turbo TT1 in 1981 21 GTO's bronze plated in 1983. There's one at the Minichamps Museum, in the AMR section. It's a 3 liter version as far as I remember. 2 Porsche 911 4x4 cabriolet in 1983 10 Audi Quattro ''sport'' in 1983 10 BB512 Spyder in 1983 10 Lusso in 1984 Bronze plated models were done mostly as gifts. It became a collector item. This bronze plated models have no link to the Stanum Linea range, which are ''just'' white metal kits produced in France and then polished/built in Germany by the Minichamps team. To my knowledge, the AMR/X/Century bronze masters are staying at Minichamps headquarters in Aacheen. So it would be a good surprise to find one on ebay. ''Bronze'' master is by the way partially wrong as from 1980 around, the ''bronze'' masters were made out of brass. Same mechanical proprieties but, cheaper.
Hope this enlights a bit the thread and the questions around this bronze plated GTO. I think a proper cleaning polishing should bring back its original shine. Can't say if it's a genuine factory built though. It's easy to plate a white metal body and the counting I made so far from the available archives are saying that from 1981 until 1990, 9.394 GTO were produced by AMR/X. This 9.394 goes for all versions and doesn't include the beginning of the GTO story at AMR, starting 1979. 9.394 is a lot of opportunities to experiment plating, isn't it ? Of course 9.394 doesn't include neither X5000, X5001 and X5002 which are out of a complete new master and which exact production is unknown to me. Some say around a thousand of each.
All the best, Antony

It should be simple to check if it is plated...just scrape away some material on the inside where it cannot be seen...and the density of the material should be apparent as well. |

Hello to all, just decided to share my bronze coated 250 GTO. It was "delivered" in a simple paper box with AMR tape, mounted on a plexi base. Sorry for the poor photo quality. Maybe a good reason to get a lightbox... Best regards, Jann

I'm very happy to have one of the 21 models to which it alludes Anthony!!! I suspect that both models ,that of Wolfgang and mine are based on the REF.400 ,though mine ,which is RHD with grille in the hood can be derived from the REF.003. Both are recognized for having the same pore in the exhaust (!)

Wow!
Thank you all for your replies and help!
I think a good indication it belongs to the "21" is the fact mine is darker in the same places as the one shown by JAPA. e.g. around the backlights, the door-handle,..
But maybe this will never be finally provable. No matter.
Just realised mine is missing the exhaust :-( Cool anyway :-)
JAPA, did you upgrade the window vacforms or were they included originaly?
Jerry, was your car as dull as mine before getting it polished? Or less dull?
Now I have to descide if I want to polish it or not. My current feeling is to keep it that way. A bit dark and dull, not shiny. But who knows..
Thanks again for all your kind help and replies Kind regards Wolfgang
