Now that the Porsche 911T is finished, my focus has shifted to a 1962 Lotus Super 7 Series 2. Here are a couple of photos taken last weekend of my son's garage where we are storing the Lotus. You will also notice a GT350 Tribute, this car belongs to my son. He is doing a full conversion to GT350-R specification and I might share more details as his project progresses. This made for a fun shot with cars from the US, UK and Germany.

The Lotus Seven project was sold mid-build and the buyer had the car sent to a well-known Lotus racer and builder in Southern California to have the car finished before going to it's new home in Florida. Here are some updates from Tony Ingram. Now I wish I still had it!

He did do the side dump exhausts, fabricated by his buddy who owns a muffler shop and does custom systems for exotics. You cannot see them in the side shot, shadow is too dark. Here is a better shot. Still dark but you can see just ahead of the rear tire.

Believe it or not when I did my research for my R project we had to use two different colors of blue on the rocker stripes. The stripe should be one shade, the GT 350 another. I know...it's was pretty anal but was told by the experts that it was correct.

Great car! Will he incorporate the side dump exhausts?

The Lexan vented rear window was a major undertaking and had to be done by a fabrication shop. If you look closely you can see the vent at the top, this allowed the race cars to pick up an additional 5mph top speed.

Wheels will get completely refinished in a satin grey/black.
Decals will be applied with race numbers and "BP" decals
Still needs R fuel cell
Some Shelby racing components still needed for the engine
Lexan door windows with leather pulls
Install passenger seat
Install fiberglass rear tray with spare tire

Final update on the Lotus 7 build. I have decided to sell the project at it's current stage and focus funds and energy on another Porsche 911. The good news is that the Lotus will go directly to a shop in So Cal that specializes in these cars and will finish the build to a very high level. If I get photos of the work or finished car I will post here. You may also recall that I mentioned my son is working on his own project, a Mustang GT350 Tribute that he is converting to a GT350R model. This car is nearing completion. If you research the differences between the "standard" GT350 street model and the "race" GT350R model, you will see what a big and costly project this is. Here are just some of the changes needed:

Exterior
GT350R front bumper with debris screen
Side vents removed and replaced with sheet metal riveted to body
Rear bumper removed, lower valance replaced with no backup lights
Tow hook installed on right rear bumper mounting points
Fuel cap and filler removed, replaced with sheet metal
Trunk lock removed, replaced with pin and hook style
Fuel cell replaced in trunk
Glass rear window removed, replaced with "R" Lexan vented unit
Door glass and regulators removed, replaced with pull up Lexan
Chrome rear view mirror replaced with RayDot style
Goodyear race tires, very sticky!

Interior
Major dashboard changes
Remove windshield to remove original vinyl dash cover
Fill in holes, sand, refinish dash top in satin black
Remove original gauge cluster
Install new sheet metal gauge housing
Install new gauges and light indicators
Replace steering wheel with correct R style wheel
Remove heater/vent controls, remove heater
Remove radio and antenna and add radio delete plate
Remove all seats, including rear fold down tray
Remove all carpet and insulation to bare metal floor
Install roll bar and fire extinguisher
Replace driver seat with R style race seat and harnesses
Remove door panels and window cranks
Replace with flat R style painted satin black

I had the nose painted in Giallo Modena, a nod to the old 355. :-)

When finished this car will look very similar to this one. Ours will not have the louvered bonnet or roundels. We will leave our roll bar chassis color grey, mirrors on ours will be Raydots. Ours will have the same Brooklands windscreen.

The seats are very simple. We ordered a kit from the UK based on the original factory Lotus patterns and made in the correct red vinyl with white piping.

The original fiberglas fenders needed a lot of work for proper fitment and rear fenders had to be widened as we are using a Cortina rear end. This moves the rear wheels further outward. The original Sevens used a Triumph Spitfire rear end, the Cortina rear end is much stronger and often used for cars destined for track use. The axles tubes are longer, hence the need for the wider fenders.

Next phase is paint and body work. Chassis had to be taped off so only the aluminum skins were exposed for the BRG paint.

They did come with lugs, ordered wheels and tires from a race supplier back east.
