Our new series will be based on the Esprit43 GTO-R R1 & R2 kits created by Mike Craig. These kits can build 3 versions, all of chassis #3223 GT, one of the GTOs with the longest racing life. This is the car of the press presentation in Maranello at the beginning of 62 and it was then sold to the US. The first photograph was taken at Mosport (Canada) where it was driven by Bob Grossman in September 1963. On the second the car is seen at the Daytona 2000 Km in February 1964 with Larry Perkins and William Eve at the wheel.

The white circles for the race numbers were of different size during the 3 races, which has been very accurately reproduced on the decal sheets. To find the exact place of the race numbers’ lights, we’ll first cut circles in some tape, apply them on the body and mark the place of the lights with a sharp needle.

Here is the Daytona 66 car with a slightly different shape of the front air-intake and the holes for the front wings turn signals. After a lot of sanding to remove the last flaws, it will be time for the first coat of red. The photographs in a few days!

The bodies are painted now with a base coat of Ferrari red and a final coat of varnish.

During its racing career in the US, 3223 GT was fitted with polished aluminium wheels and not painted ones as often with the GTOs. To reproduce this, the too shiny wheels of the kits have received a coat of satin varnish. In comparison, you can see the painted wheels on the far right of the photograph.

The decal sheet does provide the characteristic thin blue thread of the tires. For best adherence of the decals, it’s necessary to spray a thin coat of gloss varnish, and to mask the rim so that the polished aluminium effect won’t be lost. We can then apply the decals; when dry, a final coat of matte varnish and a slight weathering will give a realistic appearence to the wheels.

Very nice...especially the panel lines highlighted at the white crossover and the window frames. It would be nice to know how these details are accomplished ;) |
