Hi all, does anyone can help with 1954 Carrera Panamericana Alfa Romeo participations? I know there were 13 cars, 2 of them DNS, so there are 11 cars that participated. Any help on the colors would be appreciated. Thank you in advance. Apostolos, Greece. |

Thank you Tom, Are these decals printed by you? There are a few mistakes on all of them. First the numbers on the doors are the wrong color, the rectangle should be orange and the numbers blue according to the ANA regulations for the European entries. This color combination applies to the VW and Borgward entries too. Second they are the same both sides, the problem with the different color combination starts with a picture published in Cimarosti book that is probably pre-race considering the fact that the cars stopped to pay homage to Stangoli's death point and the drivers are very relaxed. Car #268 is light grey as you mention but what about #251 was it brown, olive green or something else? Car #265 is dark grey-blue and there are 6 words under the Bull on the rear door "equipos contables europeos sa Mexico df" painted the same orange as Bull and the numbers rectangle. There is also a Mobil pegaso at the rear next to the racing plate. All the cars had their bumpers front and middle part of the rear painted, were they painted with the body color? If you are going to make these decals in 1/43 please take these remarks into consideration |

Hi,
Yes they are printed by me but I will not be doing them in 1/43rd. On the 6 works car colors I have it listed that they had 2 dark brown cars, 1 black car, 2 white cars and a grey car. The spare car was red. On #265 we have the Mobil stickers on the sheet but could not find a good photo of the writing until after it was printed so we left it off. I dissagree with you on the number colors as I have seen color film at the race and in pictures showing the doors were the colors on the sheet and reversed on the other side also during the race(but enough numbers are given on the sheet to do either way). The color photos make the numbers look redish colored. I think one of the cars had unpainted bumpers(grey car). The #268 car is really white I understand. The #265 was another spare car driven down from New York and was reported as being red not blue. Do you have any color pictures of the #265 car? I like the Pan Am because it is uncharted territory. Alot of information is out there but very hard to find. Trying to state anything from this race as fact without good color photos is impossible.I also know for a fact that Pan Am regulations were not followed perfectly even when it came to Pan Am issued number plates. Not sure why. The 1953 Ferrari 375 MM car #26 does have white Pan Am number plates in the race for example as per color photos I have found of it. Other cars in that class seem to be yellow.
Good to have a Pan Am fan critique the models as another opinion on research is always very good to have!! If you like you can also post photos on the Ferrarichat thread on Pan Am.

Hi, you are absolutely wright about the chaos concerning the colors but you must agree that sometimes we are only looking to picture without seeng the subject. What a bigger example than the Fangio winning Lancia, all of the models available and off course toys have the plates in yellow instead of the correct white. Anyone that has the Cimarosti book this particular plate is on the sleeve. As for the Ferraris they had white plates since they were in the same category with the Lancia. According to my research the 1950 plates were white, 1951 were yellow, 1952 were red, 1954 were yellow. Now only 1953 had four color plates depending on the category, category sport were white, category turismo international were red, category sport hasta were yellow and turismo especial were green. I want to make clear that i only want to share my information and complete my research on the Alfas. |

Thank you for the information. Here is the Ferrarichat link. I just posted a color photo of the 300SL's.

Judging by all the incorrect information we have you could be right about the Mercedes logo being blue. The factory told CMC it was the same color as the stripes but they could be wrong.
By the way, I collect 1/43rd, 1/24th and 1/12th scales wich helps. I hear we might see a 1/12th scale Pan Am 340 Mexico kit soon:)

Hi, i would like to ask you Tom if i can sent models made by me to be represented in next years Ferrari expo - Carrera model contest. It far too expensive for me to make the trip to USA to show my work. Do you think you can participate on my behalf? I have some unique subjects on the bench. Thank you, Apostolos. ps. i have some problem posting to the ferrarichat forum, is there something more than registering that i have to do? |

Hi, I have done that before with model builders from Mexico, so I don't see a problem with that. I will enter the model/models under your name. As long as the models are insured and packed well this should not be an issue(I am sure you already know that). I will ship them back when the show is over insured.
What Pan Am models are you doing??? I am working on 4 Pan Am models for the 2014 Expo now. I hope to finish them all. Still have to make decals for the Pegaso(in 1/24th). I already have the 1/43rd Provence Moulage Pegaso kit.
On Ferrarichat you might have to buy a silver subscription to post pictures. If you want something posted email it to me and I will post and give you credit.
best,

Hi Tom, thank you in advance for the help on the expo. If you are doing the Pegaso bear in mind that the car was not white white it was ivoire , or English white. Also the Provence decals are not 100% correct, JAL43 model & decals are spot on. I am working on some Lincoln Capri plus transporter. Also i am still researching the Alfa Romeo team and i will add some pictures very soon here in this forum of the non factory entries. Thank you greetings from Greece, Apostolos |

Hi, the color of the #265 Alfa is dark blue gray, something like anthracite. The color is described as such by Carter Hendricks an Alfa expert and the owner of that particular car for some time. There is a fantastic article in Het Klaverblaadje nr62 1993 the Alfa club of Holland. Mr. Hendricks is in USA, St. Luis????

Now that's funny, I have met him!! I did not know he owned that car. Let me see if I can contact him. He lives only a few hours drive from me in St. Louis.

Great stuff!! I got ahold of Carter and he says he wants to help out with the Pan Am Alfa's. He sold the #265 1900 TI but says the new owner is almost done with the restoration wich he said was very difficult. I know the Dutch artist who did that painting of #265. He has done alot of wonderful Alfa prints over the years wich I bought from him direct a few years back. I will have to ask if he ever printed that 1900 painting. The internet is a wonderful thing!!
By the way, Carter said he also has photos of the 2500SS 1951 and other 1900's. I want to confirm all the colors for all the Alfa's from 1950, 1951 and 1954. My Alfa 2500 book although very good only has serial number build dates and body styles but no color info.
best,
